UNA celebrates National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21

United Nurses of Alberta celebrates the diverse cultural traditions of the Indigenous peoples whose land on which we live

June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day. United Nurses of Alberta celebrates the diverse cultural traditions of the Indigenous peoples whose land on which we live and their contributions to the field of nursing and our union.

UNA is proud to represent many nurses of Indigenous heritage in communities across Alberta, including those employed by the Aakom Kiyii Health Services of the Piikani Nation and by the Blood Tribe Department of Health in Stand Off.

For generations, many Indigenous peoples and communities celebrated on or near this day because of the significance of the summer solstice. In co-operation with Indigenous organizations, the Government of Canada chose June 21 for National Indigenous Peoples Day. This year marks the 30th anniversary of this federal recognition.

UNA honours all First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples and encourages members to recognize and celebrate the traditions, cultures and futures of Indigenous peoples.
