UNA congratulates Alberta Union of Nurse Practitioners on its certification

United Nurses of Alberta congratulates the Alberta Union of Nurse Practitioners on its successful application to the Alberta Labour Relations Board to represent Nurse Practitioners employed by Alberta Health Services and Covenant Health.

The new union is now the certified bargaining agent for NPs employed by AHS and Covenant Health.

In November 2019, the Alberta Labour Relations Board ruled in a case brought forward by UNA and two NPs that portions of the Labour Code preventing NPs from being represented by a union violated the right to freedom of association guaranteed in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

“UNA looks forward to working in solidarity with our newly unionized Nurse Practitioner coworkers to advocate for nurses, the nursing profession and Canada’s fair and efficient public health care system,” said UNA President Heather Smith.

United Nurses of Alberta is the union for more than 30,000 Registered Nurses, Registered Psychiatric Nurses and allied health workers in Alberta.
