Nurse Practitioners respond to UNA’s Nurse Practitioner application, three NPs seek intervenor status

Three Nurse Practitioners have applied for intervenor status in United Nurses of Alberta’s application for determination to represent Nurse Practitioners employed by Alberta Health Services.

The Alberta Labour Relations Board received responses on April 20, 2018 from Kevin Huntley and on April 23, 2018 from Dina Sotiropoulos and Anthony Falvi requesting intervenor status.

The LRB has also received responses to UNA’s application from six Nurse Practitioners.

Five responses raised concerns about the impact of unionization on a Nurse Practitioner’s scope of practice. UNA recognizes that a Nurse Practitioner’s scope of practice and ethical and practice standards are distinct from a Nurse Practitioner’s terms and conditions of employment.

One of the responses reflected that while UNA and the Nurse Practitioner Association of Alberta have different areas of expertise in assisting Nurse Practitioners, they share similar goals.
