New contract ratified by UNA and Extendicare

After eight months of negotiations, and with assistance of a mediator, members of nine United Nurses of Alberta locals and their employer, Extendicare Canada Inc., have ratified a new collective agreement. The new four-year contract applies to members of:

  • UNA Local 2 at Extendicare Michener in Red Deer
  • UNA Local 117 at Extendicare Eaux Clares in Edmonton
  • UNA Local 135 at Extendicare Athabasca
  • UNA Local 143 at Vulcan Extendicare
  • UNA Local 145 at Mayerthorpe Extendicare
  • UNA Local 168 at Extendicare Holyrood in Edmonton
  • UNA Local 170 at Extendicare Leduc
  • UNA Local 189 at Extendicare Fort McLeod
  • UNA Local 215 at Extendicare Viking 

Highlights of the new contract include:

  • A $2,000 lump sum payment in the first year of the contract, 2 per cent salary increase and a $750 lump sum payment in the second year, a 2.25 per cent salary increase and $750 lump sum payment in the third year and a 3 per cent salary increase in the fourth year. 
  • A $250 employer reimbursement for annual professional association fees.
  • Improvements to promotions, vacancies and Personal Leave articles, and Layoff and Recall and Hours of Work language to more closely mirror the Provincial Collective Agreement.
  • Cost sharing to continue for 12 weeks beyond health related portion of maternity leave.

UNA provides a wide range of services to its members. A key role is negotiating the excellent collective agreements that regulate salaries, benefits, schedules and working conditions of members. UNA also administers its agreements to resolve disputes, improve working conditions and protect nurses’ workplace rights.
