UNA members urged to take part in Misericordia rally Thursday

United Nurses of Alberta members are encouraged to take part in a rally for a new Misericordia Hospital at noon on Thursday outside the Mis.

Health care workers and other citizens calling for a new facility to replace the crumbling 45-year-old structure in West Edmonton will gather at 12 noon at the intersection of 87th Avenue and 169th Street.

The rally is being organized by the Alberta Federation of Labour. A petition created by the provincial NDP calling for a new West Edmonton hospital is found at www.newmisnow.ca.

Edmonton’s health care infrastructure has been woefully ignored by Alberta’s Progressive Conservative government, the AFL says in a backgrounder on the infrastructure problems at the aging hospital.

The Misericordia Hospital, operated by Covenant Health as part of the provincial health-care system, requires many expensive repairs and has been on a list of the government’s spending priorities for eight years without action. The building is now also too small to serve southwest Edmonton effectively.

Staff at the Misericordia is forced to implement over-capacity protocols regularly

These circumstances have led to the calls for a completely new hospital on Edmonton’s west side.
