Professional Responsibility a top concern for UNA members

UNA's Donna Smith facilitates a workshop discussion about Professional Responsibility Concerns.

In UNA's Professional Responsibility Concerns (PRC) workshop, nurses will develop the knowledge and skills to provide information, support and encouragement to members who report concerns, and to engage confidently with management representatives to achieve an effectively functioning PRC Committee.

As licensed professionals, Registered Nurses are required by the standards of their licensing body the College and Association of Registered Nurses and Registered Nurses (CARNA) and the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses (CRPNA) to advocate for practice environments that have the organizational and human support systems and the resource allocations necessary for safe, competent and ethical nursing care.

A process for reporting and resolving Professional Responsibility Concerns has been mutually agreed to and is documented in the Collective Agreements of nurses with their employers. The PRC Process provides for a Professional Responsibility Committee in which representatives of the UNA Local and representatives of the Employer meet to review and resolve concerns. If the PRC concern is not resolved at the committee, the Collective Agreement provides for a process in which it is sent to the Chief Executive Officer of the organization for review and resolution. If not resolved by the CEO, the Collective Agreement provides for the issues to be presented to the Governing Board of the organization.

Through this process, nurses' Professional Responsibility concerns are documented and can be addressed at the highest level of the organization if necessary.
