One-hour CFNU seminar will mark Indigenous Nurses Day on April 10

The Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions has scheduled a one-hour seminar on April 10 to mark Indigenous Nurses Day.

First Nations, Inuk and Métis nurses hold a distinct body of knowledge, strong relational responsibility and accountability to providing safe and compassionate care in communities within the backdrop of generations of colonial dispossession and systemic racism.

The live session commencing at 10 a.m. will honour Indigenous nurse pioneers like Edith Monture, the first documented Indigenous RN in Canada, reflect on the past of Indigenous health care in Canada, and shed light on how we can work together to uphold Indigenous rights and decolonize health care on the path to reconciliation.

UNA members can register online to join Linda Silas, president of CFNU; Terri Monture, granddaughter of Edith Monture; Dr. Laura Cranmer, professor emeritus of Indigenous/Xwulmuxw Studies at Vancouver Island University; Christina Marie Chakanyuka of the N.W.T. Métis Nation; and Nikki Hunter-Porter, (St’uxwtews), RN, Clinical Nurse Specialist Indigenous Health and Cultural Safety at B.C. Cancer.
