Part-time Communications Advisor [.4 FTE]

United Nurses of Alberta, the Union for more than 35,000 Registered Nurses, Registered Psychiatric Nurses and allied health care workers in Alberta is seeking a part-time Communications Advisor in our Edmonton office. This position will work 14 hours a week, generally on Mondays and Tuesdays . It will be predominately in the office. Reporting to the Manager of Labour Relations, the Communications Advisor will be part of a team responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining internal and external communications programs.

The Communications Advisor leads the development and implementation of external and internal communication strategies including media/public relations, general communications, special events and employee-focused communications, which are delivered in line with UNA’s vision, strategy and values. They possess the following:

Skills:

  • Service-oriented, able to work effectively with stakeholders (locals and members), colleagues, peers etc.
  • Excellent, clear and tactful communication skills to all parties they interact with, verbally and written.
  • Understanding of media relations and how to interact with the media.
  • Social media management.
  • Basic and advanced public communications writing – crafting and delivering messages.
  • Confident public speaker – able to share messages confidently and convey trust.
  • Creation of websites, publications, promotional materials.
  • Print, photography and AV media production.
  • Consistent approach to dealing with workload demands and people you interact with.
  • Journalistic research and analysis skills.
  • Effective time management and organization skills, with demonstrated ability to set priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Vendor management.
  • Utilizing hardware to deliver communications role e.g., computers, phones, cameras, etc.
  • Knowledge of marketing analytical tools such as Google Analytics is an asset.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, Apple products, CRM, social media, internet and presentation software.
  • Skilled with additional editing and communications software, websites and databases e.g., NationalBuilder, Flywheel, WordPress, etc.
  • Familiar with Marketing principles and SEO (Search Engine Optimization) practices and methods.
  • Current class 5 drivers’ license required.

Education:

Degree in communications, journalism, arts, public relations or a related field is an asset.

Experience:

  • Relevant experience in communications, news media relations and online communications/ social media.
  • Relevant experience designing and delivering public engagement and social media engagement campaigns.
  • Experience or knowledge of the political environment, labour movement and unions is an asset.
  • Experience or working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign and Adobe Illustrator preferred.
  • Graphic design and digital marketing experience are an asset.

Accountabilities:

  • Responsible for media relations at the UNA, including taking media request and calls, coordinating interviews between reporters and UNA representatives, advising Executive Officers and others on talking points and key messages and identifying and sharing media opportunities.
  • Daily, monitor Media and Google alerts, scanning results for media attention on UNA and flag items which require a response from the UNA.
  • Develop and deliver seminars for the UNA and affiliate/ outside organizations on media and communications topics.
  • Develop campaign plans, targets and goals and maintain oversight of delivery.
  • Prepare materials for media outreach and public relations events. Write and edit publications, posters and messages for members.
  • Draft internal and external communications, including news releases, briefing documents, speech writing, advertising consultation and some internal documents. Review documents drafted by others.
  • Responsible for communications during crisis management situations.
  • Coordinate and manage relationships with external providers e.g., advertising agencies, engagement agencies etc.
  • Advertising consultation and production, including identifying topics, writing articles in advance of publication date and providing relevant pictures, working with external agencies to prepare and implement campaigns for UNA initiatives.
  • Provide photography services and mobile video at local events, conferences, conventions and the AGM etc. to use for UNA publications and on social media.
  • Attend multi-union communications meetings and meetings with voluntary associations, not for profits, municipalities, and other unions.
  • Represent UNA on CFNU activism programs.
  • Distribute communications materials to members as relevant.
  • Maintain the UNA brand.
  • Co-manage social media and create content for Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
  • Maintain social media platforms including scheduling of posts, content management, responding to comments, sharing content from locals, advising locals on how to deal with challenging posts.
  • Work with Labour Relation Officers to create Spotlight posters which are used to highlight important articles of the UNA Provincial Collective Agreement. Distribute posters to LROs to be placed on bulletin boards.
  • Facilitate engagement campaigns for members on topics that affect them.
  • Edit and produce the UNA News Bulletin on a quarterly basis.
  • Advise locals on how to manage internal communications, providing coaching and advice to communication committees, coordinators and volunteers as needed.
  • Write up content for award submissions and nominations etc. as required.
  • Provide backup coverage for members of the Communications and Research departments.
  • Attend and participate in all assigned UNA meetings e.g. staff meetings, AGM.
  • Provides coverage as necessary in the absence of other Communications staff.

Working conditions and physical requirements.

  • In-office position with extended sitting & computer use.
  • Travel and attendance at UNA offsite work/meetings/elections – must be able to attend in person.
  • May work irregular hours on an occasional basis.
  • Travel throughout Canada.

This is a unionized position and governed by the Collective Agreement between United Nurses of Alberta and the Union of Labour Professionals.
