UNA bargaining survey begins on November 12

UNA will be conducting a bargaining survey of randomly selected members in provincial negotiations starting Tuesday, November 12, 2024. The survey will proceed until November 29, 2024.

This survey of UNA members involved in provincial negotiations (members who are not currently participating in internal UNA work such as Local Executives or on the UNA Executive Board) is conducted on behalf of UNA by Factor Research.

When Factor Research calls, often in the evening, your call display will show the UNA provincial office name and number: 780-425-1025.

If you are randomly selected to participate, please be aware that Factor Research does not leave a message but may attempt to contact you up to five times. If you are out, or unavailable when Factor Research calls, you may find UNA's number listed on your call display as a missed call.

Information collected through the survey is confidential and anonymous. To protect members' privacy, dialling is computerized. This means that although the telephone interviewer knows the name of the member they are calling, they do not know, and cannot access, the member’s phone number or any other contact information.

After responses are collected, Factor Research combines and aggregates all the data before sharing results with UNA.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact UNA Research Officer Danusia Moreau at 780-425-1025 or 1-800-252-9394 or by email at research.staff@una.ca.

Thank you for your participation!

Additional information about the survey

A few questions have arisen about the bargaining survey, particularly with respect to the survey sample size of 1,500. It is important to note is a survey of randomly selected UNA members from different workplaces across Alberta that will be conducted by a professional survey company, Factor Research.

The purpose of the member survey is to collect feedback from members across Alberta about their opinions on bargaining. The data collected will help further inform the negotiations committee as the bargaining process continues. Our telephone surveys are very useful because the respondents answer can be validated in real time.

Telephone surveys also allow UNA to gather information from a random and representative sample of Alberta nurses. This in turn enables UNA to gather data with statistical confidence, including information about a margin of error. Due to the nature of a web-based survey, where respondents self-select to participate (not random), analysis can be performed, but we cannot connect a margin of error to the results. This means UNA that can be less confident that results from a web-based survey are actually telling a true story of what is happening within the Alberta nurse population.

The survey sample size allows us to look at sub-populations, (by region, by age) and still have large enough groups to show when differences exist between groups.

A number of questions have also come up about whether or not 1500 is a sufficient survey sample size. If we tried to survey more members, it doesn't necessarily mean we will achieve a more statistically representative sample by including more of the membership.

A practical consideration is that it is helpful to get as much feedback as quickly as possible. The more members we poll, the more time it takes to analyze the results. The current survey sample size of 1500 allows us to achieve the balance of ensuring members across the province, including subpopulations, are being heard in an objective and statistically reliable manner.

If members have additional feedback they wish to provide, please feel free to direct them to send it to respect@una.ca
