UNA donates $10,000 to Canadian Red Cross for Alberta wildfire relief

United Nurses of Alberta is supporting Canadian Red Cross efforts to provide assistance to people affected by the wildfires raging across Alberta.

UNA’s Executive Board approved a $10,000 donation to the Canadian Red Cross, which is using the funds for immediate and ongoing relief, recovery and resilience efforts in response to fires, and for future community preparedness and risk reduction for natural disaster events within Alberta.

More than 25,000 Albertans have been evacuated from their communities because of wildfires this year. Evacuation orders remain in effect in the Jasper townsite and Jasper National Park, Little Red River Cree Nation, Chipewyan Lake, and parts of the Chipewyan Prairie First Nation and the Municipal District of Bighorn. Residents of other communities are on evacuation alert.

Individual UNA members are encouraged to contribute online to Red Cross efforts.

Both the federal and provincial governments are matching all donations to the Canadian Red Cross 2024 Alberta Wildfires Appeal, which means every $1 donated will become $3 to support the families and individuals most impacted by wildfires in Jasper and across the province. The donation matching will be for 30 days, retroactive to when it first opened on July 25, 2024.
