AHS plans April 2 meeting to share information on mental health and addiction organization

UNA is hopeful that this meeting will provide concrete information about what is going to happen with mental health and addiction.

Alberta Health Services CEO Athana Mentzelopoulos has invited representatives of United Nurses of Alberta and other health care unions to an April 2 briefing on the province’s planned creation of a mental health and addiction organization.

The next phase of the government’s “health systems refocus initiative,” which is to impact mental health and addiction services, is causing uncertainty and concern among members of UNA and other health care unions.

Mentzelopoulos said in her invitation to union leaders that she understands employees have questions about the transition and that AHS is committed to sharing information as it becomes available.

UNA is hopeful that this meeting will provide concrete information about what is going to happen with mental health and addiction. All we have at this point is vague references to a mental health and addiction organization.

UNA will keep members informed of the explanation AHS provides and will continue to press for the release of full information on how the planned changes will affect nurses and other health care workers.
