UNA thanks members who ran as candidates in provincial election

United Nurses of Alberta thanks our members who voted in yesterday’s provincial election and congratulates the newly elected MLAs and candidates who put their names on the ballot.

In particular, UNA would like to thank three members who stepped up to run and stand by their convictions as candidates in this election: Danielle Larivee in Lesser Slave Lake, Diana Batten in Calgary-Acadia, and Myles Berry in Edmonton-Gold Bar.

Nurses play an incredibly important role in the public health care system and in our communities as leaders. Having the voices of nurses who understand the challenges and realities of what’s happening on the front-lines of the public health care system heard in the election is critical.

UNA has always been a non-partisan organization and does not endorse any political party but that does not mean our union is neutral on issues that have a direct impact on patient care, health care and our members workplaces.

UNA will never hesitate to advocate for changes we believe will improve the health and well being of our members and all Albertans, especially at this time when governments are pushing for greater privatization of health care. We have professional obligations to vigorously oppose policies that will have a negative impact on patient care and the nursing profession.
