UNA Wellness Day to focus on Healing the Healer

United Nurses of Alberta members are invited to register to participate in the union’s fourth Wellness Day event on May 18, 2023, with the theme Healing the Healer.

Focusing on mental health and self-care, this day-long Wellness Day online event will feature speakers Barb Campbell, Tonya Ratushniak, Stephanie Staples, and David Granirer, who will share skills that can help UNA members boost their resiliency, teach relaxation and stress relieving methods.

UNA President Heather Smith and Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions President Linda Silas will bring greetings at the start of the day.

UNA members planning to attend are encouraged to request a Professional Development Day.

Members who are unable attend this symposium live will have the opportunity to view a recorded version following the event. More information will be available soon on how to access the recording and the deadline when it will no longer be available as per the terms of the presenters.

Session: Getting The Laughs You Need!
In today’s world of mental health, change, stress and tension are major challenges to everyone’s wellbeing! Laughter is the cure, the best medicine, a cod liver oil for the soul. But unlike cod liver a dose of laughter is not only good for you, it also feels good to take!
You’ll learn:
  • How to use humor to overcome burnout.
  • How humor lessens the effects of trauma.
  • How humor builds self-esteem.
  • How to help clients use humor to generate insight.
  • How your people can use humor to turn their dysfunctions into strengths
  • How humor can help combat public stigma.
DAVID GRANIRER - BIOGRAPHY
Founder, Stand Up for Mental Health
David Granirer, RPC, MPCC, M.S.M, is a counselor, stand-up comic, and mental health keynote speaker. David, who himself has depression, has taught stand-up comedy to recovering addicts and cancer patients, and founded Stand Up For Mental Health, his award-winning program teaching comedy to people with mental health issues in 2004. His work is featured by media worldwide and in the VOICE Award winning Passionate Eye documentary Cracking Up and the award-winning Australian documentary Crack Up.

He has trained Stand Up For Mental Health groups in partnership with various mental health organizations in over 50 cities in Canada, the U.S., and Australia.

He is the recipient of many accolades for his outstanding work including an Award of Excellence from National Council for Behavioral Health for his work using comedy to de-stigmatize mental illness.He also received a Champion of Mental Health Award. These national awards recognize individuals and organizations who have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of the mental health agenda in Canada. David also received a Life Unlimited Award presented by the Depression Bipolar Support Alliance. This is a national award given to individuals who live a life unlimited by their mood disorders and inspire others to do the same.

As a multi-titled author with eclectic qualifications that combine learnings from her background in healthcare, journalism, fitness and communications - Steph has some unique insights and tools to share. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot Nursing Happy Hour is a roundtable discussion led by two experienced nurses with a passion for mental health advocacy. Zoom participation is not only welcomed, but essential, as we discuss the priorities, challenges and workplace wellbeing within the current climate of nursing.
