World Water Week begins with Edmonton screening

World Water Week begins with a screening of “Bottled Life: The Truth About Nestle’s Business with Water,” sponsored by the Council of Canadians and other groups, this afternoon at the University of Alberta.

Another important water-related event takes place Thursday evening co-sponsored by the Council of Canadians and the University of Alberta’s Parkland Institute on protecting water.

“Protecting Alberta’s Water Commons: Challenges and Opportunities” will address the decline in Alberta’s water reservoir levels and increasing levels of pollution and ecological balance in this bodies of water, as well as discuss the impacts on water of global warming, oil-industry fracking, agriculture and cities.

Guest speakers include Cindy Chaisson of the Environmental Law Centre, Edmonton-Strathcona MLA Rachel Notley, the New Democrat Environmental Critic, and Shannon Studen Power, Research Director of the Parkland Institute.

The film begins at 5:30 p.m. in Education South Room 107 at the University of Alberta. Thursday’s conference starts at 7 p.m. in Room 134 the Telus Centre, 111 Street and 87 Avenue, on the U of A campus.

In addition, mark your calendars on April 11-13 for the 7th Annual Conference of Public Interest Alberta. This year’s theme is “Fighting for our Future: People Power vs. Corporate Control.” 

Guest speakers include, Linda McQuaig, author of The Trouble with Billionaires, Crystal Lameman of the Beaver Lake Cree Nation, and Gregor MacLennan and Peas Peas Ayui of Amazon Watch.

That conference, also co-sponored by Parkland, begins on Thursday, April 11, at 6 p.m. in the Chateau Louis Conference Centre, 11727 Kingsway NW, Edmonton. It runs until 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 13.
